In 2025 the UKs old Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) will be switched off. That means and end to PSTN and ISDN services for all customers, both commercial and residential.
As the UK transitions to an all-digital telecommunications infrastructure there are some important changes that we need to bring to your attention.
What is happening?
As part of the UK becoming a well-connected country, using modern digital infrastructure, the old PSTN (such as analogue ADSL, FTTC, fax or ISDN) connections are being replaced with new digital services and the old lines will then be switched off.
The old network is increasingly at odds with the way we communicate. As the world embraces mobile connectivity and the Internet of Things expands exponentially, the old copper wiring is simply not fit for purpose.
What does this mean?
If you currently use an analogue telecommunications service, such as Fibre-To-The-Cabinet (FTTC), ADSL, analogue (traditional telephone) or ISDN, you will need to migrate to a new service – such as a full fibre connection (aka Fibre To The Premises, or FTTP).
This will normally provide a faster and more reliable connection for subscribers and involves a move to VoIP based calling/SIP that sends calls over the internet. If you have any of these services, you will need to migrate to a new connectivity solution as soon as possible.

What about other connected devices?
Don’t forget, it’s not just your telephone line that will be affected. You may have several other systems connected to the PSTN network, such as alarms, EPOS systems, door entry systems, CCTV equipment and faxes (yes, some people do still have one).
A solution called SoGEA may be available that, where appropriate, can enable you to use your existing hardware to connect to the new digital telecommunications infrastructure without your existing analogue telephone line being required.

When does this happen?
The switch off in Bristol and some surrounding areas is imminent. Whilst BT aims to have completed the switchover by 2025, the process is well underway. Some areas expected to transition this year include Bristol, Cardiff, Cornwall, Exeter, Swansea, and Swindon.
